Top Burger List - The Daily Meal 2017

From time to time, I will share "Top Burger" lists. Generally, I disagree with them - primarily because I don't particularly care for how they judge what is a good burger or not (it all goes back to the discussion about "Is it the best burger?" or "Is is the best toppings for a burger?" conversation) - most of the lists err on the side of the best toppings.

That said, they nearly always contain a worthy recommendation, and I pay attention to them even if I don't completely agree with them.

Burger Review - In N Out...

Address: 3545 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Suite L24, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Phone: (800) 786-1000
Webiste: http://www.in-n-out.com/

Review:

What more can be said about In-N-Out that has not been said by millions of their rabid and loyal followers? The California-based burger chain has a cult-like following, and has been producing some of the worlds best burgers since Harry Snyder opened up his first drive thru stand in Baldwin Park in 1948.  300+ locations later, and still going strong.

I have been to In-N-Out countless times - I am not from California, nor have I ever lived there. But because I appreciate all things burger, In-N-Out was on the must try list from practically everyone that has every visited one of their many locations west of the Mississippi River (sadly, they have yet to reach Colorado).

Burger Review - Classic 101 Burgers & Shakes...

Location: 575 Ralston Ave, Belmont, CA 94002
Phone: (650) 592-0505
Website: http://www.classic101burgersshakes.com/

Review:

Just south of San Francisco, just off of US 101, is a small but mighty old fashion burger stand called Classic 101 Burgers & Shakes. Throughout all my travels, I have certainly found that San Fran is not the mecca for all things burger. But Class 101 stands out.

In The News - McDonalds Burgers Compared...

No, I promise you that this is not going to be a blog that focuses on McDonalds every day. But while I am on the road at the moment, McDonalds went head to head in a taste competition against Five Guys and Shake Shack.

You can find the results here:

http://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-five-guys-shake-shack-best-premium-burger-2018-5

For the record, I believe that Shake Shack and Five Guys generally serve a better product. And this test the determination for winner was actually that McDonalds had better TOPPINGS, which is a stupid reason to think they have a better burger - the burger at Shake Shack and Five Guys is absolutely better. But in both those cases, the price of their burgers is significantly more (upwards of 50% more) than McDonalds. Is it 50% better?

Burger Review - Buds Bar...

Location: 5453 Manhart St., Sedalia, CO 80135
Phone: (303) 688-9967

Review:

In the small town of Sedalia, Colorado - population just over 200 - is the best burger in Colorado and quite possibly one of the very best in the country.

Bud's Bar has been making burgers for over 60 years. Located just off of US Hwy 85 between Denver and Castle Rock, it has been a mainstay for the biker crowd for years. But that isn't to say that it is biker bar / dive. The crowd is as diverse as possible - my wife and I came in one night to a packed bar, only to see that - in addition to the normal crowd of ranchers, golfers and bikers - the local girls equestrian riding class was having a princess party there.  I am not kidding.

Burger Review - McDonald's Fresh Quarter Pound Beef...

Location: Across the United States (8011 S. Broadway, Littleton, CO 80122 visited for review)
Website: https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/fresh-beef.html

Review:

I have been asked by numerous people what my opinion is about the new "fresh" beef at McDonald's. So I thought it would make sense to write a quick review.

First, it is McDonald's - somewhere we have all likely been a hundred (or more) times. One of the best qualities about McD's is that regardless what you think of the quality, you will get pretty much the same experience (more or less) no matter where you go. There is a certain comfort in this, especially if you are in a rush or just looking for something inexpensive and simple.

What Makes the BEST burger?

Finally getting back to this blog, after MANY people have asked me about it.

To recap from a previous post:

Where are the best burgers? If you have ever had a meal with me, in all likelihood it was at a place that serves a decent burger. Not all burgers are created equal (by any means), and I would contend that there is the point that “the best” is a matter of personal style or preference (flame broiled or fried, special toppings or in the buff).

My criteria are probably overly simplistic, but I am not complicated when it comes to judging quality burgers: bun, meat and cheese.

The Bun: the most overlooked aspect of a great burger is the bun. The bun should match the burger type. Lots of variables here, but the bun should never be discounted.

The Cheese: I am a good ol’ American cheese kind of guy. Some places will offer a variety of cheeses for the individual palate, but American cheese should always be an option.

The Meat: Fresh, never frozen. Ground chuck is always a good place to start (not too fat, not too lean). A seasoning salt is not out of the question, but good ground beef should be able to stand on its own.

The Toppings: Unfortunately, if you came here looking for the best guacamole and peanut butter burger, you have come to the wrong place.  Call me a burger purist (I am), or a burger snob (I am that as well), but I believe that if you are interested in the best topping for a burger, you are not really interested in the burger itself. If you want great guac, go to any number of Mexican restaurants and they will make it at your table. If you are looking for a menu of 30 different toppings to mask the quality of your burger, then so be it - MANY people are interested in that, and just as many will lay claim to the "Best ______ Burger" and that is OK as well.  You just will not find those burgers listed here.
